Cleveland Way Day 9


On our way out of today's quaint village, Robin Hood's Bay. 


Aren't these sheep handsome? We want to tuck them into our backpacks to keep us toasty this winter.

We love seeing the farms go right up to the sea cliffs.



A high point of our walk was hearing this seal colony from quite a distance -- very haunting. The is just a portion of the group.  I've been rereading Dracula while we are here and I think the seal songs would be every bit as effective as wolves howling to darken the mood.

Scarborough Castle in the distance. Today's walk was our longest (15 miles) and tomorrow is our last. We will spend tonight in Scarborough, a much bigger town than we've stayed in so far.

Walks in Bath and Bristol

August 1-3 We've covered a lot of our environs on foot the last three days. First, we encountered a film crew on one of the grand Bath byways. Netflix is filming the Seven Dials, an Agatha Christie series here now. As far as we can tell, that doesn't look like Martin Freeman or Helena Bonham Carter, but word has it they were in town. Turns out this is a popular locale for filming period series and movies. Might be enough to make us check out Bridgerton.  The Kennet and Avon canal runs through Bath and we saw this local inhabitant on one of the boats for hire. May we be so lucky next week!  We also walked by the second deepest lock in England! Makes a nice vertical garden. Outside of Bath is Prior Park, and the centerpiece there is an estate built by Ralph Allen with the express purpose to market the glorious stone he happened to quarry (he was quite an entrepreneur). It is beautiful and has gorgeous views of the entire Bath area....

Cleveland Way Day 10

We did not go to Scarborough fair, but we did see many fishing boats lined up on this rainy day.  Walking along the beach promenade offered many opportunities for arcades and beach chair rentals. Also donkey rides. We kept on walking.  "Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers" depicts an average Joe who went to WWII as a young man and was forever changed. Freddie was a real person and member of the Royal Artillery who participated in the liberation of the Bergen Belsen concentration camp.  The beach around Scarborough goes on for miles. It felt quite incongruous to come upon this golf course because it was raining and it seemed like they were all just standing around. The rain stopped and we enjoyed our beach views. Arrival in England and on to Bath

July 30 After a night in the air, we arrive in London and head to Paddington station to travel to Bath.  We will be here for about a week and there is a ton to see. We walk by some of the sights, including the Abbey near the Roman baths.  We hang out in a nice garden by the River Avon.  Lots of neat landscaping and tourists enjoying the hottest day so far in England.  We had a rest here before checking into our AirBnB and settling in for our stay.
