Cleveland Way Day 7

We set off from our lodgings under gray skies, after a nice breakfast visit with some fellow walkers from Harrisburg, PA.

Goodbye, Staithes!  It is one of many darling seaside towns we are passing through on this segment of our walk.

The cliffs aren't as high and the skies aren't as blue as yesterday but we love to hear the pounding surf accompany us as we cover 12 miles today.

This part of the walk is sometimes impassable at high tide but we make it before the tide comes in. It was about 60 degrees all day and every beach had families doing their beach thing despite the clouds and the cold. You gotta beach when you can!

We leave the beach via this stream...

And head into this green tunnel.

At the next beach we see a couple of surfers.

Our destination today is the town of Whitby, which is a bit bigger and a bit cheesier for the tourists.  It is famous for inspiring Bram Stoker's Dracula, which we will learn more about tomorrow when we visit a local abbey.

This small pirate ship baffles us with its scale. As we watch from shore it looks not quite big enough for Benji and Felix to captain.

Miniature golf and a sculpture of William Scoresby, a whaling sea captain who coined the term Crow's nest for a ship's lookout perch.

Skipper Dora, the only woman to hold a boat pilot's license during WWII. She piloted boats through the minefields in the war. She also served as a nurse in WWI. She was sent to Yorkshire with bronchial problems which is when undertook her second career as a skipper.

Shall we descend en masse?

A whalebone arch has stood in town since 1853. This is actually the third arch in commemoration of the whale industry. The remains of the Whitby Abbey stand in the background.

  1. That second photo with Staithes looks so much like a painting. Seems like you have had plenty to entertain the eyes.-Kelly
