On the Boat!

We take a train and bus to get to our boatyard! They point us towards our home for the next two weeks.

Our narrow boat is truly narrow.

We get about an hour of training before we take off.

After cruising for a couple of hours, we moor in this sweet quiet spot. We load up on supplies from Aldi. Kevin makes us a great meal. We haven't eaten our last pub meal but it sure is nice to have a break.

The next day we cruise for a solid 8 hours to meet some friends of Kevin and Diana's at a specific spot.

Everyone we meet is so helpful, though these swan toughs look threatening.

We see other critters.

Tons of dogs on boats and on the towpath. This little skipper accompanied a solo boater. We've met quite a few apparently solo men who make their boats their homes for at least part of the year.

We go through a section with fancy houses with their own moorings for their fancy boats.

So many adorable cottages and gardens.

And we get just enough practice on the locks to prepare us for a massive lock day coming up! Diana and I get the hang of it after a few rounds. I personally think it's a blast!

  1. Are the locks failsafe? Or if you mess up, will you create a sequence of flooding that will make international news? "American tourist flood downtown Birmingham".

    1. A part of a lock could fail at our hands and we could clog up traffic. Some of the locks have crumbling infrastructure. But we don't know what we don't know. Keep your eye on the headlines.
