Cleveland Way Day 8

We leave our place in Whitby under gray skies and intermittent fog. Our BnB is in the vanilla-colored town house way in the back of the picture. Today is our shortest day -- 8 miles.

When we reach Whitby Abbey on the edge of town, the sky is blue.

The abbey was established in 657 by a group of nuns. In the mid 9th century, viking raids led them to abandon it, and monks returned in 1078.

The remnants of the abbey that stand today were built between the 1200s and 1400s. The site has a museum where we learned a lot about the abbey's rich history.

Once we left the abbey, the fog returned.

The first section had plenty of spots where the cliff trail had recently caved in.

Spooky pier remnant.

During a sunny moment, we walk by these fields of blooming flax, clover, and thistle.

An old foghorn, used from 1902 to 1987.

A lighthouse / AirBnB combo.

Just outside of our home base for the night, we see a replica of a rocket post, which was used to shoot a rescue line out to boats.
