Cleveland Way Day 2


Today we started our walk near a viewpoint that James Herriott called the "finest view in all of England." It's a fine view! But maybe not even my favorite of the day. 

Village and sheep dotting the landscape. 

Swaying grasses as we reach a crossroads. Crosstrails. 

We had a few patches of woods today. 

But mostly lots of moors and heather and stone walls. We spent a few miles alone on this desolate landscape and it was a bit spooky. 

We sheltered by the stone wall to enjoy our lunch before the skies opened up. Rain pants rock! 

After we came down from the moors we found ourselves amidst these waist-high ferns. 

So many sheep! Today we covered 12 miles.

    Yes rain pants are the best! Unless it is really hot like it is here this week! I hope you are having some cooler weather for walking. I am trying not to be too jealous of photos of the moors!-Kelly

Walks in Bath and Bristol

August 1-3 We've covered a lot of our environs on foot the last three days. First, we encountered a film crew on one of the grand Bath byways. Netflix is filming the Seven Dials, an Agatha Christie series here now. As far as we can tell, that doesn't look like Martin Freeman or Helena Bonham Carter, but word has it they were in town. Turns out this is a popular locale for filming period series and movies. Might be enough to make us check out Bridgerton.  The Kennet and Avon canal runs through Bath and we saw this local inhabitant on one of the boats for hire. May we be so lucky next week!  We also walked by the second deepest lock in England! Makes a nice vertical garden. Outside of Bath is Prior Park, and the centerpiece there is an estate built by Ralph Allen with the express purpose to market the glorious stone he happened to quarry (he was quite an entrepreneur). It is beautiful and has gorgeous views of the entire Bath area....

London Royalty

Westminster Abbey was our first stop on our tour of all things royal.  Lots of history (and history makers) memorialized here. It's pretty much a massive cemetery where they also hold weddings and coronations.  These windows adorn the chapel where Oliver Cromwell is buried.  Mark prefers this pose for his tomb. Note the smaller person at his feet.  This pose will do for me.  A view through the cloisters.  Buckingham Palace is nearby. As is this amazing bronze statue on top of Wellington arch, commemorating Wellington's victory over Napoleon.  We ended our royal tour at Kensington Palace. We didn't go into either palace but did enjoy their lovely grounds.

Graffiti Selections

Cruising in Birmingham and its urban surroundings exposed us to a lot of graffiti. We rarely know what it means but it often caught our attention, whether for a seeming sense of humor... Or sharp detailing and vivid colors -- these are probably familiar characters to some who see it.  We know these dudes.  Some sections had panel after panel of scenes.  We are fond of capturing one mode of transport while riding another.  This was a long scene that got partially covered by another artist. Interestingly that doesn't seem to happen all that often. I know what this one means.
