A Day in Oxford

August 5

Nearing the end of the first stage of our England trip, we hopped on a train from Bath to Oxford.

We are seeing plenty of old sites and amazing buildings as we travel and one (maybe) unique thing about Oxford is that the purpose and activities remain very similar to what they were nearly 1000 years ago.

That is, studying and chasing Harry Potter references. Or Inspector Morse if you prefer.

Oxford has a glorious botanical garden and it's more than 400 years old.

We spent a few hours wandering the paths.

Fascinating how they train some of their apple trees.

And a fruit tree like we have in our own backyard! Maybe this pawpaw is further along than the ones on Overbrook or Pearl Wood?

This sycamore tree certainly is further along.

A well-worn walking path gives us a view of Christchurch College. Some of the Oxford colleges are open to visitors and tours and this is the only one we passed through.

The public entry point to Christchurch had its own beautiful gardens.

After indulging in local ice cream, we rode the train back for our last night in Bath.

  1. Very peaceful. Makes me miss Ohio just a bit. Kevin

  2. Definitely reminds one of Harry Potter. And so many other films! Of course, I wouldn't know the difference between Oxford and Cambridge, but the architecture looks similar.

  3. Unfortunately I haven't seen any pawpaws in either of our back yards, but there is at least one big clump on your street. And there are plenty in Athens, maybe not quite as far along, but close.-Kelly

  4. I love the gardens! Why don't mine look like that? Maybe after 1000 years... --Ame
